If you are planning your next trip to Mexico, you should definitely visit Tulum. It is such a beautiful destination with many things to do and lots of nice spots to discover, I immediately fell in love! As you are planning your trip to Tulum, you might get a little bit overwhelmed by the huge range of accommodation possibilities there are. Tulum is known for its three distinct areas, all with pros and cons. If you are wondering where to stay in Tulum, this guide will definitely help you discover the best accommodations in those three different areas!
Different areas of Tulum
Tulum can be divided into three VERY different areas: you can either choose to stay in Tulum Beach (playa) or in Tulum Town (pueblo). The nearest beach is about 5km from Tulum Town. If you can’t choose between the beach or town area, you might want to consider Aldea Zama. This area lies in between Tulum Town and Tulum Beach. Before you decide where to stay in Tulum, it’s good to know which area you prefer staying the most. Therefore, I’ve created a little summary with reasons to stay in each of the three areas. Time to pick your favourite!
Go to Tulum Beach if you
- Want to stay in a beautiful resort, hell yeah!
- Feel like money is not an issue.
- Are looking for the most Instagrammable hotspots in Tulum.
- Are planning to spend your days relaxing at the beach. Get that tan baby!
Go to Tulum Town if you
- Would love to experience more of Tulum’s local culture.
- Are looking for a more budget friendly place on where to stay in Tulum.
- Want to experience a fantastic nightlife with dance clubs, bars and street parties.
- Prefer pools over the beach.
Go to Aldea Zama if you
- Can’t choose between Tulum Beach Area and Tulum Town Area.
- Want luxury AND comfort: All the complexes are brand new with the highest standards, oh yeah!
- Would like to have everything nearby. Aldea Zama is nearby the main street of Tulum and all the supermarkets. Also the beach, Mayan Ruins and cenotes are just a few minutes away.
- Love cycling! There are bicycle paths throughout the entire area.
- Prefer a tranquil and private stay.
OK, now that you have a somewhat better picture of the three areas, let’s zoom in on them! I will start with my FAVOURITE area: Tulum Beach. Next, you will find the accommodations in Tulum’s Town Area and I will end with some beautiful places to stay in Aldea Zama. Are you ready? Let’s go!
Where to stay in Tulum Beach
When entering the beach area of Tulum it really feels like stepping into paradise. All the beautiful resorts are located on the eastern side of the beach road, with most of them having private access to the beach. Even though Tulum’s beach is public, most of the resorts have carved up their slice of the beach so you have to be a guest to have access to that part of the beach. Luckily, there’s also a public beach area in the north. To help you figure out where to stay in the beach area of Tulum, it’s the easiest to break the beach down into four smaller areas: North Beach Area, Beach Town, Middle Beach Area and South Beach Area.
Where to stay in the North Beach Area
The North Beach Area is nearby the Mayan ruins and some famous cenotes in Tulum. This area is the most quiet area in Tulum with just a few restaurants, hotels and beach clubs. My suggestions on where to stay in the North Beach Area of Tulum are Jashita Hotel, O’Tulum and Mi Amor.
If you are looking for that celebrity treatment with world-class service you should definitely visit Jashita Hotel! This 5-star hotel is located on the beautiful white sanded beach of Tulum where you can relax all day long. Jashita Hotel offers 3 outdoor pools, a bar-restaurant, suites with private plunge pools and a luxurious penthouse with a sea-view terrace. What else do you want?!
O’Tulum is the perfect place to stay if you are looking for an adult-only accommodation. Even though the sea is within walking distance, O’Tulum offers a nice infinity pool on the terrace, two other swimming pools AND private pools in each room, OMG! The area around O’Tulum is very popular for snorkelling and diving. Bikes are available for free!
Next up is Mi Amor. This hotel is located upon a small rocky hill and is the perfect place to relax nearby the Caribbean Sea. Dip into your private plunge pool, enjoy live DJ sessions, drink the most delicious cocktails at the bar or take some photos nearby the infinity pool!

Where to stay in Beach Town Tulum
In the Beach Town Area of Tulum you can find a lot of hotels, restaurants and shops. It’s the more affordable beach area and the perfect place for partying, relaxation and shopping. My recommendations on where to stay in Beach Town Tulum are Papaya Playa Project, Zamas Hotel and Azulik.
Papaya Playa Project

Next up is Zamas Hotel. Zamas is named after the mayan word zamá, meaning new beginning or sunrise, and embodies the adventurous spirit of its namesake. Zamas offers a perfect combination of bohemian-chic and rustic luxury. Whether you prefer a family room, bungalow, garden room or jungle room, everything is possible! Treat yourself with a massage or beauty treatment, relax on the beach, eat some delicious food in the open-air restaurant or chill in one of the hammocks.
If you really want to reconnect yourself with nature and be totally free from internet and electricity, you should definitely visit Azulik. Azulik is a private adult-only beach resort with a wonderful spa, beauty center and beach bar. During your stay in Azulik you will sleep in a tree house suite with views over the beach and jungle. Some of the suites even have their own hot tub, love it!

As the name states, the Middle Beach Area is at the heart of Tulum beach. Here you can find a lot of beach clubs, restaurants, nightclubs, boutiques and yoga studios. The Beach Tulum offers the most epic beach-front rooms with a private pool, patio, balcony and terrace. You can even decide to go for one of the rooftop suites! Where to stay in the South Beach Area
The South Beach Area of Tulum is more quiet than the Middle Beach Area, but it’s still within walking or cycling distance to all the restaurants, beach clubs and nightlife. When planning to stay in the South Beach Area of Tulum my suggestions on where to stay are: Be Tulum, Nomade Tulum and La Valise Tulum.

Starting with beautiful Be Tulum Beach & Spa Resort. This resort is the perfect place to relax at the beach, chill in your private pool or hot tub and enjoy the delicious food in one of the three on-site restaurants. Some rooms have their own private pool and it’s up to you whether you prefer that nice jungle view or a more calming ocean view.
Last but not least: La Valise. This is one of the most beautiful places in the south of Tulum. It’s the perfect beach and jungle getaway with beautiful rooms and the most stunning views. The rooms offer handcrafted furnishing, open-air showers, hammocks and a nice terrace. Breakfast is available for all guests and during the day you can relax in the lounge area at the beach or enjoy a fresh cold drink at the bar.

Where to stay in Aldea Zama, Tulum
If you still don’t know whether you prefer your stay at the beach or in town, Aldea Zama might be a good option for you! This new, eco-friendly and luxury development is located right between Tulum Town Area and Tulum Beach Area. Naala Tulum provides comfortable rooms, a beautiful rooftop with a swimming pool and a nice restaurant.
How to visit Tulum
Before you decide on where to stay in Tulum it’s good to do some research on how to visit Tulum. Especially with COVID-19 you will have to take some extra things into account. Listed below, you will find some useful information for your trip to Mexico.
Covid-19, vaccinations & visa
Despite COVID-19 it is possible to travel to Mexico since there are no entry restrictions at the moment. All travellers coming from countries with active COVID-19 cases will of course be screened. If you show any symptoms you will be quarantined. Before travelling to Mexico you need to fill in a https://afac.hostingerapp.com that you must show upon arrival to immigration. I would highly recommend you to check the latest travel advisories maintained in your country for traveling to Mexico. You may be subjected to quarantine upon returning home.
When you are planning to travel to Tulum it’s good to keep in mind that taking vaccinations is highly recommended before visiting Mexico. Especially, hepatitis A and typhoid fever are two prevalent occurring ailments in Mexico. It’s best to check in your own country which vaccinations are recommended for Mexico. You don’t need a visa when you’re visiting Mexico as a tourist, but it’s always good to check any other required travel documents.
You can easily book your flight to Mexico via Skyscanner, Expedia or Tripadvisor. Just pick Cancun Airport as your final destination and from Cancun you can travel to Tulum by taking the public ADO bus or take a taxi. Of course, you can also choose to rent a car and drive to Tulum by yourself. I would really recommend you to rent a car so that you can explore more than just Tulum alone. If you don’t plan to rent a car then I would recommend you taking the ADO bus since taxis are overpriced and most of the time not commercially licensed. The distance between Cancun and Tulum is approximately 118 kilometres (73 miles) so the journey would take you about 1,5 to 2 hours, depending on the traffic.
The best time to go to Tulum
If you are very excited to visit Tulum after reading this blog post you might wonder what’s the best time to go. Well.. good news for all the sunny and tropical lovers among us: Tulum tends to have warm weather throughout the whole year. However, it’s the rainiest in Tulum in June, September and October. I would say that the best time to visit Tulum would be from October to December, when the hurricane season is over. Most of the tourists will visit Tulum from January through March, so if you want a relaxing stay I wouldn’t recommend going in those months.
That was it for now! If you have any questions on where to stay in Tulum, please let me know in the comments below.
